When you go to a land-based casino there is lots of surveillance and people watching you all the time, and there is also the Pit Bosses. They are always there watching, but what else do they do to manage the casino and what are the cryptic signs they use? Pit boss or sometime referred to as the supervisor is the one who oversees all the activities going on in the casino and on the floor of the casino. He has is eyes on everything and everyone who is working for him, and the casino players who are gambling. They will walk around and patrol the area which they are assigned to and keep everyone in check. A pit boss will make sure that everyone is following the rules and guidelines of the casino and can also tell if someone is cheating at the tables. They will even keep the dealers in check and monitor the players who are at the table; and they can even change the dealers if they are continuously losing and bring in a new dealer. How did they get the name “pit boss?” It comes from the area or “pit” of the casino where all the tables are for blackjack, roulette, craps and other games. Pit bosses are the ones who will open and close the tables according to how many players there are, and how many dealers are on staff. He or she will report directly to the casino manager.

What make a good Pit Boss and why?

The usual characteristics for someone to become a boss are experience, skills, knowledge about casino games, and especially personality traits. They need to know how to read people and situations while assessing the tables to make sure everyone is playing properly. On average they need about 5 to 7 years working at the tables and usually come up from the dealer or host positions. A pit boss must always be alert to players in the casino who are attempting to cheat and look for the type of activities that will signal that like counting cards or other shady activity. They will also oversee the players winnings and make sure all the appropriate paperwork is completed when the players are cashing out. Or they might have to handle any disputes between the dealer and the player. The main job of the pit boss is to make sure everything runs smoothly in the casinos and to make sure that guests are treated fairly, and everyone is having a good time. They need to keep players happy and make sure they are gambling at the tables.

The main signs pit bosses use on the casino floor

Pit bosses have a list of secret codes and signs they use to communicate silently with the dealers and other staff so that players do not know what is going on. One of them is called the clipboard tilt, where they use it to point to a specific table if they feel that there is suspicious activity going on. As second method is the tie adjustment and how they adjust it; like a swift adjustment, to let the dealer know a high roller just walked in. They often will use hand gestures to signal instructions to the staff, or other non-verbal movements that will indicate that something is up. In some cases, the pit boss will suddenly do a floor plan shuffle which signifies that a VIP has arrived or added security. All this is done to keep the casino making money at all hours.
